Feature and Follow Friday {3}

Feature and Follow Friday is hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. This week's featured blogs are Carmen Jenner and The YA Bookworm Blogger.

This week's question is:
What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book? For example, if an author employs an omnipotent narrator that is sometimes considered bad form.

My answer:
When I read George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones, at first, I had a problem with the multiple POVs. I hadn't read anything like that before, so it took me a while to adjust. Also, there's the abundance of metaphors in Tahereh Mafi's Shatter Me. Some of them didn't make sense, but I still loved it. Overall, I think any device would work as long as it's executed well.

If you follow, comment and I'll follow back!

  1. Hi! :)
Sometimes authors do stuff their books with too many metaphors and I agree it can be irritating.

  2. I'm not a fond of multiple POVs myself, but there are authors who can pull of any writing styles as well.

  3. Yeah, too many metaphors can offer beautiful writing, but it can also take away from the story itself if used to much... *new follower*

  4. I actually loved all the POVs in A Song of Ice and Fire - the chapters are long enough that it doesn't get confusing, and it means we can see all over Westeros =)

  5. I actually like when there are multiple POV's in a story but as long as it doesn't get too out of control. Old follower :)

  7. Oh man, I am a spectacularly huge fan of Game of Thrones! I got used to the PoV since they are stated at the start of chapter & there is no way you can get confused. Also, the man has some writing skills!!

  8. Hi!
I totally agree with you. I may have things I like more than others, but ultimately if there is good execution I could get into almost anything.

  9. I don't mind two or three different POVs- but any more than that can be too much. Thanks for stopping by my FF- new GFC follower!

  11. I read a book recently where almost every single character in the series has a point of view (and there are lots of characters) and it got on my nerves so bad. It was hard to follow the story with that many POVs going on. I have to agree.

  13. Now that you mention it, metaphor overload is hard to deal with sometimes! I tend to overlook it if I'm enjoying the rest of the book. I think for me, if the plot and characters are engaging enough, the writing style is secondary and I can deal with just about anything if I want to know what happens badly enough.

  14. I like different POV's in a book as long as they aren't over done. I think mostly I like them from the main female and male perspectives, because in a lot of YA theirs is the only opinion that really matters to me. LOL.

Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier, returning some of the love <3

  16. Hello. New follower here! I agree with you about the execution of the device being what's important. If it's done well then it doesn't matter. Thanks for sharing.

Also, I am giving away a Kindle or Nook (winners choice) on my blog if you are interested. The contest ends tomorrow at midnight!
