Another "I'm still alive" post. Sigh.

I've been chillin' the past few weeks - or as much as I can, anyway, because man, you haven't experienced summer if you've never felt the Philippine summer heat.

Let's start this catch-up post with cover reveals! I signed up for two in particular but I wasn't able to post on the assigned days because I was too lazy to fire up my laptop. I seriously need to replace this piece of crap.

Bounce is the third book in the Boomerang series by Noelle August. I've only read the first book, Boomerang, but I certainly plan on reading the rest.

Imagine my surprise when I got the email packet for the Every Last Breath cover reveal. Not only did it have the cover for said book, but new covers for the first three books in the series as well! I admit I'm not a huge fan of the original covers, but I sure prefer those over these new ones. Ugh.

Aside from work being stressful as always and trying to read as much as I can, I've also begun writing again. I do it on my phone with the ever-handy Inkpad Notepad app to save time and also so I can write whenever and wherever I want to. And this time I'm working on a YA contemporary that's been floating on my mind for ages. Let's just say it's every bookworm's dream on Valentine's Day ;)

Lastly, I am ending this post with an announcement. I have finally picked the winner for my giveaway! Check the rafflecopter widget to see who the lucky duck is. She's already replied to my email, so no chance of the prize going to another person, heh.

Novella Mini-Reviews: Bitter Sweet Love; Evil Red

Title: Bitter Sweet Love (The Dark Elements #0.5)
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Release Date: December 1st 2013
Publisher: HarlequinTEEN
Age Group: Young Adult
Source: NetGalley
In a sizzling prequel novella to her new series THE DARK ELEMENTS, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout draws readers into the extraordinary, irresistible world of Wardens and demons.
Dez wasn't just Jasmine's crush. A gargoyle Warden like Jas, he helped her come to terms with her destiny—fending off demons and maintaining balance between good and evil. He was her everything...right until the moment he disappeared without a trace. It didn't help that Jas's father had just announced that she and Dez would one day be mated. Hard not to take that personally.
And now he's back, three years older, ten times hotter, ready to pick up exactly where they left off. But Jas isn't taking that risk again. Dez has seven days to meet all her conditions and earn back her trust. Seven days filled with terrifying danger and sweet temptation. Seven days to win her heart—or shatter it all over again...
For two days a book I've been reading put me in a reading slump - it's that boring but I refuse to give up and DNF it - so I decided to read something short but undoubtedly good; imagine my glee when I found this sweet little baby in my Kindle app. It's no secret that I loved White Hot Kiss, but I certainly didn't expect to love this prequel novella just as much.

Dez and Jasmine were not hard to love, both as individuals and as a couple. From best friends to almost-lovers to we-had-zero-contact-for-three-years, they obviously had a ton of history. I understood Jasmine's anger at him because of the way he left without saying a word, especially given the announcement her father had just made. I was wary of Dez at first but when his reason for leaving was revealed... my heart. What he did suddenly became reasonable and nothing but sweet because all that hatred inside him really would have gotten between them. Also, watching Dez trying to win back Jas' heart was just so adorable and entertaining. These two = shipped.

But aside from their heartwarming romance, it was also nice to get an insight into the world of Wardens through the eyes of someone who was, well, a full-blooded Warden. And you have no idea how much I squealed when pre-WHK Layla, Zayne, and Roth - oh, Roth - made an appearance. Can Stone Cold Touch just come out already?

MY FAVORITE PART was Dez and Jas meeting Roth. My bias is showing. Sigh.

Title: Evil Red (Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter #2.6)
Author: Nikki Jefford
Release Date: March 2nd 2014
Publisher: Self-published
Age Group: Young Adult
Source: ecopy from the author (Thanks, Nikki! <3)
L.A. is one tough city, especially while sharing a trailer with four thieving sisters.
Valerie’s plans for a better life and Hollywood grandeur are interrupted after a fateful stabbing lands her in Anchorage, Alaska where government agents expect her to play the role of a vampire hunting La Femme Nikita.
The redheaded vixen is back in her own novelette.
If I hadn't grown to like Valerie in Northern Bites, I seriously wouldn't have even bothered to read this, but I did, and now, I think I may even love her? Me, loving the bitchy type? Wow.

Aside from my newfound love for this redhead, Evil Red confirmed another thing for me: that I no longer have an inkling of like for Fane. I can't believe I once found him appealing in Transfusion. Sure, he's the perfect balance of naughty and nice, but something about him turns me off. Pretty sure it's the way he pushes away and then, all of a sudden, pulls in people, particularly girls. I thought it was just Aurora he did that to, but turns out even Valerie received the same treatment from him.

But back to Valerie. Because I have now gotten a glimpse of her history with Fane, her rudeness to Aurora when she first entered the picture has made sense. I really thought Valerie saw Fane as nothing but property, but turns out she actually liked him for real. Not sure how much, but the way he made her feel special, unlike the guys she'd dated before, got to her, and that's removed her from my mental hit list. I really hope to see her again in Bad Blood.

MY FAVORITE PART was Valerie and Fane's date. Is it wrong to be shipping them now? I want Aurora with Dante anyway :3

Book Review + Giveaway: White Hot Kiss - Jennifer L. Armentrout

Title: White Hot Kiss (The Dark Elements #1)
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Release Date: February 25th 2014
Publisher: HarlequinTEEN
Age Group: Young Adult
Source: ARC borrowed from Louisse of The Soul Sisters
One kiss could be the last.
Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.
Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.
Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.
But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.
I have a lot of things to say about this book, but if you're in a hurry and don't have time for my rambles, then this is all you need to know: I freaking loved White Hot Kiss. It's my most favorite JLA book right now - and that says a lot considering I loved every book of hers that I've read. It was so fun and easy to read because it had JLA's practically-signature wit and hilarity, but more, somehow.

From the first time I heard about this book, I was already curious about this fictional world. Gargoyles versus demons? Um, yes, please. I also wanted to know more about Layla, the protagonist. Just how had a demon and Warden gotten over their differences and come together to create her? The mix of the two races in her created a struggle between which side she would act on, and that was really interesting to watch. Raised among the Wardens - the good guys - she was taught to hate demons, but that also meant loathing a part of her that always threatened to go out of control.

Now I'll talk about the two boys who confused Layla more than the two bloodlines running inside her veins. There's Zayne, the Warden whom Layla was raised with and may as well be her brother, and Roth, the demon with the anaconda tattoo and whose intentions were questionable at first. Zayne was swoony enough, but there's just no trumping Roth with his pets and respect for Layla's decisions. Also, out of all the bad boys I've read about before, he's the one who had me snorting with laughter the most.
Roth snatched the arm out of the air, face incredulous. "Did you just throw this at my head? My head? Are you insane?
But it's truly not Zayne's fault that he lost this fight, because he just wasn't in the spotlight as much as Roth was, and watching Layla fawn over Zayne wasn't nearly as much fun as watching her bickering while slowly liking Roth. Also, I enjoyed seeing them being more like siblings than lovers, though I hated how she'd get angry at him and then, moments later, give him a free pass and blame herself instead, and I hated it even more because Zayne would be like, "Hmm yeah, it is your fault, Layla." Ugh.

Addictive and unpredictable, White Hot Kiss will find at least one reason for it to stay in your hands until you've finished reading it, whether it's the entertaining characters or the action-packed plot. This book ripped my heart to shreds and had me despising free will, but most of all that its sequel is ten months away! :c

MY FAVORITE PART was the zombie in the school's basement =))

Book Review: Obsession - Jennifer L. Armentrout

Title: Obsession
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Release Date: May 31st 2013
Publisher: Entangled Covet

Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo | iTunes
He’s arrogant, domineering, and... To. Die. For.
Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy.
Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into something... unnatural. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret.
Hunter stirs Serena’s temper and her lust despite their differences. Soon he’s doing the unthinkable—breaking the rules he’s lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe. But are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena’s life... or is it Hunter?
"Every villain is a hero in his own mind." Not quite, Tom Hiddleston. Not quite.

Serena Cross was used to the quiet life, the only occasional disturbance being her outgoing best friend, so when Mel cried wolf on the man she was dating, Serena didn't think much of it... until she witnessed Mel's murder in the hands of an otherworldly creature, thrusting her into a dangerous game between the government and two alien racesinto the arms of Hunter.

If you've read the Lux series, then you know that Arum are evil and ruthless killers—but think again. Apparently, this book has been making people jump from Team Luxen to Team Arum, and I'm glad to hop into the bandwagon! That doesn't mean that come Origin, I'll be wishing death upon Katy, Daemon, and the others, just that I'll have more sympathy for every Arum that I'll come across in the remaining books of the series. Consider me enlightened, knowledgeable (as far I as I know) of the real deal with the Luxen and Arum

Now on to the characters. Assuming you've read at least Obsidian, then you've witnessed the sizzling hot fury chemistry between the two MCs in the YA series; well, that's also how it was for Serena and Hunter. Even their first real conversation went very much the same direction: south.
"I didn't kiss you," he scoffed.

For some reason, I thought I should be insulted by the way he said that. "All right, when you put your mouth on mine? Is that clear enough for you?"

Hunter's grin tipped higher. "You have a feisty little attitude, don't you?"

"You're about to get a feisty little foot up your ass," I spat back.

Since I've already made the comparison, let me continue. Serena was like the adult version of Katy. She was bold and daring and sometimes downright stupid, but she never let Hunter and his domineering attitude dictate her actions (well, except in the bedroom ;D). Hunter and Daemon, on the other hand, had less similarities. Hunter was straightforward and there was no doubting or questioning him; he did as he said. He was no good guy, but when faced with Serena... well, you can imagine how that went.

Obsession is an extraordinary Adult spin-off novel to the Lux series, but read that: it's an Adult novel. So, young readers, while I don't really believe in censorship, you better be prepared for explicit sex scenes. Admittedly, said sex scenes came quite early on in Serena and Hunter's relationship, but who said only teens can have raging hormones? Besides, I enjoyed watching that lust turn into love while they tried to survive all the dangerous action. The ending was well and all, and I'm half-wishing and half-not-wishing for a sequel because I seriously don't want more characters to worry about in this fictional universe.

MY FAVORITE PART was Serena and Hunter's second visit to Luc's. Talk about a small world...

Starting over sucks.
When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.
And then he opened his mouth.
Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something... unexpected happens.
The hot alien living next door marks me.
You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.
If I don't kill him first, that is.
I first read Obsidian more than a year ago, and even then I'd already loved it to bits. Everything about itfrom the plot to the setting and especially the characterswas very addictive, and I was hooked from start to end.

Katy was kind and calm but feisty when provoked, and I could relate to her not only because she felt like such a real teenager, but also because she's a book blogger! Yep, she's not just the stereotypical bookworm goody-two-shoes. She spazzes about books the way I do—the way we do, blogger friends! Anyway, her halo got thrown to the corner every time Daemon, her hot alien neighbor, was within interacting distance, and it was amusing to see Katy be both repulsed and attracted to him. Daemon was, unarguably, a douchebag, but his backstory was reason enough for that. And really, their hilarious and sexual-tension-filled bantering just entertained me.

The other characters also added so much to this story. There was Dee, Daemon's sister, who was kinda desperate to have a human friend. She was so perky, and I'm pretty sure we wouldn't get along too well if she were real. And then there were the other alien triplets: Ash, Andrew, and Adam. The first two had attitudes that were worse than Daemon's, but Katy was tough enough to handle them. And finally, Katy's mom and human friends, Lesa and Carissa, who were worthy distractions for when the aliens next door became too much for her sanity.

This take on aliens was very fresh and unique, and it worked well with the story because I don't even want to imagine Katy falling for an innards-eating monster! But I'll shut up now and let you discover for yourself the type of alien that JLA has written—types, actually, because their enemies were a different species.

An incredibly fast-paced book that was equal parts sci-fi and contemporary, Obsidian never bored me, not even for a second, and has made this one of my favorite book series ever!

MY FAVORITE PART was Daemon's sleepy fondling =))

Title: Shadows (Lux #0.5)
Release Date: February 21st 2012
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Goodreads | Amazon
The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are... well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane. Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.
Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in. Captivated. Lured. Loved.
Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence... and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.
Because I read this prequel novella after Obsidian, I knew how it would go. I knew that Dawson Black fell for a human, and that love became the end of him. Still, watching firsthand just how instantly and utterly smitten Bethany and Dawson were with each other—well, that just made the whole thing more depressing.

But enough of the sad. There were also a lot of fun times here, particularly when the Black triplets were together: something we didn't get in Obsidian. Dawson was the toned-down, boy version of Dee, but also the carbon copy of Daemon... Yep. And the last chapter was the ultimate explanation of Daemon's douchy-ness in Obsidian, so I think people who hated him in that book will like him, even a little, because of this.

MY FAVORITE PART was Dawson's first visit to Bethany's home XD

 Title: Onyx (Lux #2)

Goodreads | Amazon | The Book Depository
Being connected to Daemon Black sucks...
Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.
Something worse than the Arum has come to town...
The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we're linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there's this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that's possible. Against all common sense, I'm falling for Daemon. Hard.
But then everything changes...
I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?
No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies...
Onyx picks up a few days after the events in Obsidian. Immediately, I was pulled back in by Katy, Daemon, and their incredible out-of-this-world chemistry. Hell, I was swooning in less than ten pages! But that said, Onyx wasn't as swoon-y as I'd thought it would be; instead, it stocked up with the action that some people might have wanted the first book to have had.

There was a lot going on in this sequel, what with Katy, um, "changing"; a new guy moving in on her, much to Daemon's rage; and the DOD becoming more of a problem for them. And there was also Katy trying to stay away from Daemon, trying to push down her feelings for him because she thought he only wanted her because of their alien mojo connection.

While Daemon still had his douche-y side here in Onyx, we also got to see a little bit more of his sweet side that he often kept hidden. Unfortunately, there was also more of his controlling side—granted that he was doing it to protect Katy, it still wasn't fair that he'd keep his distance, though not for long, just because she wouldn't do what he wanted her to.
"He just doesn't want to see me hurt." And that actually hurt to say, because I knew there was a mile-long road of good intentions behind what he had been saying last night, but he needed to see me as an equal. Not someone who was weak and needed rescuing.
Katy, on the other hand, became more of a badass in here (can't say more without being spoiler-y, I'm afraid), but she made a lot of facepalm-worthy decisions and actions, and sometimes she just irritated me.

The crazy chain of events led to a shocking, heartbreaking, and totally risky ending. It made clear just how heightened the stakes were, and I get nervous when I think about just how much worse it could get for these characters in Opal.

MY FAVORITE PART was Daemon joining Katy when she filmed a Stacking the Shelves video. Sweet baby Jesus, why don't I have a Luxen to do that with?!

RATING:

Title: Opal (Lux #3)

No one is like Daemon Black.
When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well... There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.
But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.
After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different... And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.
Together we’re stronger... and they know it.
Opal was one hell of a third book. It had immediate tension, making my brows furrow in frustration within a few pages. I was also sucked right back into JLA's crazy world of aliens. The ominous feeling was a constant in this book, and I worried for my beloved Luxens and hybrids the whole time.

One thing I noticed was how there really hadn't been character development as much as character exposure. They haven't changed a lot from Obsidian until now; we merely see more sides to them that, probably, even they themselves didn't know about. Believe me when I say no one is to be fully-trusted in this series.

Daemon was sweeter than ever, but he still had his controlling and possessive streak, wanting Katy to stay at home to keep her safe (like what I mentioned in my Onyx review above). Thankfully, Katy never backed down.
I know you're upset because you worry about me, but I'm not going to be the girl who sits at home and waits for the hero to wipe out the villains.
She worked hard and toughened up so Daemon would see her as his equal, and I appreciated that plus her getting him to respect her decisions because I believe those are essential in a healthy relationship.

Here in Opal, we get two new somethings. There was Katy and Daemon's full-blown romance (finally!) which felt like the only respite from their universe of problems. Their sweetness make me sigh and giggle like a schoolgirl. And then there was Dawson. I loved seeing more of his dynamic with everyone: something we only got a taste of in Shadows.

You know a book's good when you keep putting off reading it just because you don't want it to end, even though I really wanted to finish the characters' misery by turning that last page. Shit kept hitting fan, and the hard times brought out the worst in everyone. And that ending? Sure brought out the worst in me.

MY FAVORITE PART was their prom. And after it, hee ♥
