A Bookish Day: #VTRinPH!

Guess who I met last Saturday? Yep, that's Ransom Riggs, Tahereh Mafi, and Veronica Rossi! *cue freakout* They're three of my favorite authors so you can imagine how ecstatic I was to be in the same room as them. I was lucky enough to be part of the bloggers forum and my question was for Tahereh:

Book Review: Into the Still Blue - Veronica Rossi

Title: Into the Still Blue (Under the Never Sky #3)
Author: Veronica Rossi
Release Date: January 28th 2014
Publisher: HarperCollins
Age Group: Young Adult
Source: ARC from publisher
Their love and their leadership have been tested. Now it's time for Perry and Aria to unite the Dwellers and the Outsiders in one last desperate attempt to bring balance to their world.
The race to the Still Blue has reached a stalemate. Aria and Perry are determined to find this last safe-haven from the Aether storms before Sable and Hess do-and they are just as determined to stay together.
Meanwhile, time is running out to rescue Cinder, who was abducted by Hess and Sable for his unique abilities. And when Roar returns to camp, he is so furious with Perry that he won't even look at him, and Perry begins to feel like they have already lost.
Out of options, Perry and Aria assemble a team to mount an impossible rescue mission-because Cinder isn't just the key to unlocking the Still Blue and their only hope for survival, he's also their friend. And in a dying world, the bonds between people are what matter most.
Into the Still Blue is the final book in one of my most favorite post-apocalyptic series. Series-enders are bittersweet reads, and I would have put off reading this because I didn't want to reach the end of Aria and Perry's journey, but the need to know what happens won.

With the Aether getting worse and worse, resembling what happened during the Unity, Aria and Perry have no choice but to move their entire tribe of Tides and Dwellers to the Still Blue. After the events in Through the Ever Night, they have an idea of where that safe haven is, but getting there is their new problem.

This is the hardest part of the journey for everyone. As much as Aria and Perry want to stay together with their loved ones - most importantly, each other - they cannot, because they both carry the weight of getting their people to safety. And this is where this couple have always stood out. They are young and in love, but they are not stupid and reckless. They have both grown so much since the first book and are truly capable of leading almost half a thousand people and going against an abominable villain whose eyes I wanted to claw out with my bare hands. They also complement each other perfectly: Aria evening out Perry's edges, and Perry giving Aria the strength that the world was taking from her. Most of all, they both know that a dangerous mission such as theirs requires sacrifices, and they go through with it even at the expense of their own happiness.

Aside from Aria and Perry, their best friend Roar is another favorite of mine, so heartbroken Roar broke my heart. His easy demeanor is gone after suffering a terrible loss, but this is where his friendship with Aria shined through the most. She is there with him through it all, and I just love how their relationship never borders on romance and how close they've become in less than a year - six months, if I remember correctly - almost like Perry and Roar who grew up together.

Chock-full of equal parts unpredictable action and emotion, Into the Still Blue is undoubtedly the best in the trilogy. It made me giggle like a schoolgirl (because lovesick!Perry is just adorbs), laugh more times than I could count, and cry like I was the one who'd taken a beating. This last book answers all the questions and provides a beautiful ending, one that is more than satisfying.

MY FAVORITE PARTS were Soren being Soren. With all the tension and worry that this book caused me, the spurts of laughter that he brought out of me were more than welcome.

Novella Mini-Reviews: Brooke; Crossing the Line

Title: Brooke (Under the Never Sky #2.5)
Author: Veronica Rossi
Release Date: November 26th 2013
Publisher: HarperCollins
Age Group: Young Adult
Source: Bought
Set just before the events of Into the Still Blue, the conclusion to Veronica Rossi's Under the Never Sky trilogy, this breathtaking novella is a satisfying stand-alone for new readers as well as an exciting glimpse at favorite characters from the trilogy. Pulsing with romance and danger, Brooke will leave readers desperate for the conclusion to this epic and unforgettable saga.
The only fight she can't win is the one for Perry's heart. Following the stunning climax in Through the Ever Night, the Tides have been forced to seek shelter from the Aether storms in a dismal, secluded cave. But Brooke's memories of the cave go back much further, to when she and Perry used to come here together. That was before Perry fell in love with Aria and before Vale's dealings with the Dwellers altered the course of the Tides forever.
Now, with her sister back from a haunting year in captivity and Aria lying unconscious in the sick bay, Brooke struggles to put the pieces of her life back together. Without Perry, who is she? And what is her role in this frightening new world? As these questions swirl about her, an old threat to the Tides resurfaces, and Brooke is forced to put the lives of her people before her own. But in taking this step outside of herself, Brooke may finally discover what she truly wants.
I'm not going to lie—before I started reading this novella, I had zero fondness for Brooke. I saw her as another obstacle for my Perry/Aria ship (still one of the top ships in my fleet). She was right up there in my hit list with Consul Hess and Sable, and it actually crossed my mind not to read this for the simple reason that it's about her. But pick it up I did, and I'm glad I made that decision.

I didn't want to like Brooke, but Veronica Rossi wasted no time in making me feel otherwise. I understood her side of things—and by 'things' I mean her dislike of Aria—and I actually pitied her because she really did seem to be alone. But I also admired her because even though her life sucked, she didn't break down and let sadness get the best of her. Instead, she put up a strong, brave, and determined front which eventually became reality.

Long story short, there was lots of character development for Brooke in here, and I'm really excited to see the new her in Into the Still Blue (hopefully she'll be less of a bitch to Aria or the two of us are going to have problems again). Oh, and there was lots of kissing too; not quite the kind I'd expected, but better, in my opinion. Hey, a girl's allowed to have her fun, right?

MY FAVORITE PART was the Four teasing Brooke :))

Title: Crossing the Line (Pushing the Limits #1.5)
Author: Katie McGarry
Release Date: April 1st 2013
Publisher: HarlequinTEEN
Age Group: Young Adult
Source: Bought
Lila McCormick, Echo's best friend from Pushing the Limits, first met Lincoln Turner when tragedy struck both their lives. But she never expected their surprise encounter would lead to two years of exchanging letters—or that she’d fall for the boy she’s only seen once. Their relationship is a secret, but Lila feels closer to Lincoln than anyone else. Until she finds out that he lied to her about the one thing she depended on him for the most.
Hurting Lila is the last thing Lincoln wanted. For two years, her letters have been the only thing getting him through the day. Admitting his feelings would cross a line he’s never dared breach before. But Lincoln will do whatever it takes to fix his mistakes, earn Lila’s forgiveness—and finally win a chance to be with the girl he loves.
Lila was one of my favorite characters in Pushing the Limits. She stuck by Echo through everything, even when it meant she could lose her popular status. She seemed like such a brave, carefree girl, but even then I knew there was something up with her, particularly with her love life.

Well, turns out she had a secret guy! Lila met Lincoln during Echo's and Lincoln's brothers' funeral, and since then, they've been exchanging letters. As in real, honest-to-God handwritten letters. In a time of emails and texts, just how sweet is that? We get less than a hundred pages of their story, but their chemistry was undeniable and their love nowhere near instant. It was nowhere near perfect, too, but I liked how they were both mature enough to let go of their inhibitions and go after what they really wanted.

Crossing the Line is a freaking novella, but I feel like I've just read another romantic, sexy, funny, and emotional novel from Katie McGarry. I loved the ending, but I want more! Random, but I'm not the only one who wants to read about a group date between all of the couples in this series, right? Right?!

MY FAVORITE PART was Lila and Lincoln's hilarious commando stint.

Book Review: Through the Ever Night - Veronica Rossi

Title: Through the Ever Night (Under the Never Sky #2)
Author: Veronica Rossi
Release Date: January 8th 2013
Publisher: HarperCollins
Source: Bought
It's been months since Aria learned of her mother's death.
Months since Perry became Blood Lord of the Tides, and months since Aria last saw him.
Now Aria and Perry are about to be reunited. It's a moment they've been longing for with countless expectations. And it's a moment that lives up to all of them. At least, at first.
Then it slips away. The Tides don't take kindly to former Dwellers like Aria. And the tribe is swirling out of Perry's control. With the Aether storms worsening every day, the only remaining hope for peace and safety is the Still Blue. But does this haven truly exist? Threatened by false friends and powerful temptations, Aria and Perry wonder, Can their love survive through the ever night?
In this second book in her spellbinding Under the Never Sky trilogy, Veronica Rossi combines fantasy and sci-fi elements to create a captivating adventure—a love story as perilous as it is unforgettable.
At the time of this writing, it's been a little more than an hour since I finished reading this book, and the only right way I can think of to start this review is by saying Why did I let this sit in my TBR pile?!

Under the Never Sky ended with Aria and Perry reuniting, but in the first book, it was brief. Through the Ever Night starts with that same scene, but longer and more emotional, and I had to stop myself from rush-reading to the part where they crash into each other's arms. Okay, enough of me. So Perry brought Aria home to the Tides, but as they'd both expected, she wasn't welcomed. But they kept on trying until they realized that, yet again, they had to go on separate paths to do what they had to do.

I sure hope that last part wasn't spoiler-y.

I loved seeing how much Aria had grown during her time away from Perry. She's stronger—both physically and emotionally—and wiser, which helped her in dealing with the Tides and other Outsiders. Perry, on the other hand, surprised me because in the first book, he'd been the fierce and mighty one. Here in the second book, we got to see past his strong facade as he led his uncertain tribe.

With a wider array of characters, there was also a whole lot of created and rekindled relationships. It was fun to see them all because these relationships were, for me, the heart of this story. We saw deeper into what these characters were made of especially when they're up against something worse than each other: Aether.

As was the first book, Through the Ever Night was a harsh story set in a harsher setting, but lightened up with romance and friendship. There was so much internal and external dilemma for every character, and those were expertly woven together by Rossi's beautiful writing. And I don't know how I missed it before, but I really love how this series combines futuristic with primitive.

MY FAVORITE PART was right before the Marking ceremony.

RATING:
I also gave the first book a solid 5, but this is so much better.

Novella Mini-Review: Roar and Liv; Destroy Me

Title: Roar and Liv (Under the Never Sky #0.5)
Author: Veronica Rossi
Release Date: October 30th 2012
Publisher: HarperCollins
We met Roar and Liv in Under the Never Sky and learned about their saddening backstory. So when I started reading this novella, I thought I was ready for all the feels because I knew where this was headed. Turns out, one can never be ready for heartache.

Sweet and sad at the same time, Roar and Liv made me tear up starting at chapter three (yes, three), and then in every few chapters after that. It wasn't all sobs though, because in here, we also got a deeper look into Roar and Perry's friendship which brought moments of laughter.

I guess my only complaint about this one is that it's very short, even for a novella, but that also means the plot was extremely tight and the pace extremely fast.

MY FAVORITE PART was every single one with Roar and Liv together in it. This whole novella, basically.

RATING:

Title: Destroy Me (Shatter Me #1.5)
Author: Tahereh Mafi
Release Date: October 2nd 2012
Publisher: Harper
You can't imagine how loud I squealed when I learned about this novella. I loved Warner in Shatter Me, but after reading this, well, as Warner said, "I've fallen. So hard. I've hit the ground. Gone right through it."

Here in Destroy Me, we get to know Warner a whole lot better. We learn the real reasons behind some things he did that made Juliette abhor him - because yes, he's not wicked just because he's the spawn of a futuristic devil.

When I re-read Shatter Me before I reviewed it, I fell for Adam, but now, I am solidly in Team 62 *waves flag*

MY FAVORITE PART was the scene with the dog. I think that revealed so much about Warner's character.

Waiting on Wednesday {11}: Through the Ever Night - Veronica Rossi

Title: Through the Ever Night (Under the Never Sky #2)
Author: Veronica Rossi
Release Date: January 8th 2013
Publisher: HarperCollins
It's been months since Aria last saw Perry. Months since Perry was named Blood Lord of the Tides, and Aria was charged with an impossible mission. Now, finally, they are about to be reunited. But their reunion is far from perfect. The Tides don't take kindly to Aria, a former Dweller. And with the worsening Aether storms threatening the tribe's precarious existence, Aria begins to fear that leaving Perry behind might be the only way to save them both.
Threatened by false friends, hidden enemies, and powerful temptations, Aria and Perry wonder, Can their love survive through the ever night?
In this second book in her spellbinding Under the Never Sky trilogy, Veronica Rossi combines fantasy and dystopian elements to create a captivating love story as perilous as it is unforgettable.
I fell in love with Under the Never Sky (review here!) all over again when I joined Pitch Dark's re-read, and now I'm more than ready for the sequel! Unfortunately, I've come across some tiny spoilers :( Anyway, just a few more weeks before I get more Aria/Perry! I still need to read Roar and Liv, though...

Book Review: Under the Never Sky - Veronica Rossi

Title: Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky #1)
Author: Veronica Rossi
Release Date: January 3rd 2012
Publisher: HarperCollins
Pages: 376 (paperback)
Source: Bought
Since she'd been on the outside, she'd survived an Aether storm, she'd had a knife held to her throat, and she'd seen men murdered.
This was worse.
Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland—known as The Death Shop—are slim. If the cannibals don't get her, the violent energy storms will. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He's wild—a savage—and her only hope of staying alive.
A hunter for his tribe in a merciless landscape, Perry views Aria as sheltered and fragile—everything he would expect from a Dweller. But he needs Aria's help too; she alone holds the key to his redemption. Opposites in nearly every way, Aria and Perry must come together to survive. Their unlikely alliance forges a bond that will determine the fate of all who live under the never sky.
I always hated how, when I read a book for the first time, I read so fast, I tend to skim through the important parts—but I've never hated it so much as now, after my second read of this truly wonderful book.

Aria had known nothing but ease and comfort her whole life—what with living through her Smarteye, a device that enabled everyone inside the Pods to do whatever they wanted by just thinking it—until she lost contact with her mother who'd gone to Bliss, another Pod, for her scientist work. Aria tried to pry information out of Soren, the son of one of their leaders, but let's just say her plan didn't work out the way she'd thought it would.

One of the main criteria in rating dystopia/post-apocalyptic books is world-building. Did you see that thought-up world behind your closed eyes? Did it terrify you or made you wish you live there? Did the writer do so well, you could practically taste the world through the pages? I'm very happy to answer "yes" to all of those questions. And yes, I do want to live under the never sky, even with its terrible yet fascinating Aether (which I imagine as destructive Aurora Borealis, lol).

Another reason why I loved this book was the characters. Aria had the potential to make me hate her with her Dweller background, but she didn't. She never made me facepalm or cringe, but instead made me admire her. She handled her new reality really well, and that's pushed her into my Top Ten Favorite Heroines. And then there's Perry. Oh, Peregrine. He was strong, tenacious, and, at times, harsh, so it was a delight to see glimpses of the thoughtful softie deep inside him.

Now for the romance. Aria and Perry disliked—or maybe even hated—each other, which was to be expected because she's a Dweller and he's an Outsider. They banded together because they had to, so it was nice to see that slowly change into because they wanted to. Beware, though, because when I said "slowly change", I meant "hair-pulling sexual frustration". Anyway, what set their romance apart from the ones in other books was that instead of dropping everything else to be together, they chose to man-up and do what they had to do. I swear that wasn't a spoiler.

And then there were the Marked, as in the Auds, Seers, and Scires—Outsiders who had extraordinarily strong sight, hearing, and smell. I liked how there was an explanation to their existence instead of being there just for the sake of adding to the futuristic feel and natural birth control.

However exciting and unpredictable the plot was, I felt like it lacked a real climax, but that doesn't mean it lacked action. Oh, no, it surely did not. The story was one great journey that had me desperate for more, especially with that ending! And you know a book was made by an expert mind when it receives a Most Cinematic award. Now let me uncharacteristically bite my nails while waiting for Through the Ever Night (just a few more weeks! *happy dance*).

MY FAVORITE PART was... wow, this is so hard. I'll choose the one that hit me the most: the last two paragraphs ♥ They had me squealing like a kid who just got a nice, big lollipop.

Waiting on Wednesday {2}: Finale; Roar and Liv; Reaping Me Softly

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine

Title: Finale (Hush, Hush #4) - Becca Fitzpatrick
Release Date: October 23rd 2012
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing
Nora is more certain than ever that she is in love with Patch. Fallen angel or no, he is the one for her. Her heritage and destiny may mean they are fated to be enemies, but there is no turning her back on him. Now Nora and Patch must gather their strength to face one last, perilous trial. Old enemies return, new enemies are made, and a friend's ultimate betrayal threatens the peace Patch and Nora so desperately want. The battle lines are drawn—but which sides are they on? And in the end, are there some obstacles even love can't conquer?
I forgot to include this in last week's post *facepalm*

I can't believe one of my favorite series ever will end really soon, but I can only hope this farewell will be a happy one. In lieu of this, I'll be re-reading the first three books once I get a copy of Hush, Hush in hardback (I had that in paperback and the next two in hardback, and God knows how much I hate mismatched editions, so I gave it to a friend).

And I'm more than excited for another round of Patch's witty lines!

Title: Roar and Liv (Under the Never Sky #1.5) - Veronica Rossi
Release Date: October 30th 2012
Publisher: HarperCollins
Goodreads
Before Perry and Aria, there was Roar and Liv.
After a childhood spent wandering the borderlands, Roar finally feels like he has a home with the Tides. His best friend Perry is like a brother to him, and Perry's sister, Liv, is the love of his life. But Perry and Liv's unpredictable older brother, Vale, is the Blood Lord of the Tides, and he has never looked kindly on Roar and Liv's union. Normally, Roar couldn't care less about Vale's opinion. But with food running low and conditions worsening every day, Vale's leadership is more vital — and more brutal — than ever. Desperate to protect his tribe, Vale makes a decision that will shatter the life Roar knew and change the fate of the Tides forever.
Under the Never Sky is another book that I plan to re-read before getting to its sequel, Through the Ever Night, but I should be fine with this novella.

I loved Roar in UTNS; he was funny, the friend Aria needed during those trying times. I hope he'll get his happy ending.

What confuses me though is why this one's numbered 1.5. Isn't this a prequel, making it a 0.5?
